Killzone 2 review
Ignore the perfect scores.
K2 is not as some called it "The second coming of Jesus"
It is a fun game don't get me wrong. The graphics look great at some places. however it looks sloppy in others.
Overall I give it a 7/10
AI- The #1 monumental problem in this game. I know I shouldn't bitch about this since I'm currently doing the AI for our game and im learning the hardships and pitfalls. But still, this is the #1 reason this game pissed me off.
Enemy AI: Enemy AI has "spider sense" meaning if you put your crosshair on them, they will move out of the way. This isn't good AI, this is flat out cheating. Enemies don't even have to be looking at you, they can be behind cover in good fire position shooting at your teammate, and once you put your crosshair on them, they will move out of cover for no reason, lose their good fire position, and basically frustrate you to no end.
Enemy AI is "psychic" you can almost never sneak up on the enemy unless its scripted. Even when its scripted however, you have until the end of their conversation to kill them (if two enemies are talking to each other and you have the drop on them), because they they will automatically turn and shoot you once their scripted even ends. To test this, I once got the drop on the enemy, and while they were talking, I ran backwards into the previous room and put myself COMPLETELY OUT OF SIGHT, and when they finished talking they went "ENEMY SPOTTED" and ran to my location.
Buddy AI: Buddy AI will always shoot you in the back. There was one time we were defending a spot, so I chose to defend left flank, stupid idea, enemies come from the left flank and my Buddy AI behind me shoots me in the back and I die. There is also no way to turn friendly fire off.
Buddy AI moves on without you. This is annoying as shit, as I want to explore and look at stuff, because its a great looking game. However the buddy AI doesn't give a shit about you and moves on without you, and will either clear the next room not letting me even shoot my gun, or dies and gets in trouble.
Buddy AI will constantly block you and get in your way.
The next issue in the game is Weapon Balance:
The Knife. The Knife is the best weapon in the game. It is absolutely absurd, you can litterally play through 90% of the game with just the knife. I've sprinted up to badguys and knifed them before they can even get a shot off. Something is wrong in a game when using the knife is more fun than shooting the gun. Gun battles took too long for me, and didn't do enough damage or all the guns reacted the same way. So instead, I just used the knife and ran through the game.
Last issue is graphical. For such a pretty looking game they put some dog shit in it. I don't like the film grain filter. I don't like some of the textures on things. At the last boss fight, theres a giant statue, it looks like it was made out of 5 triangles and textured like poo. So there sits a giant piece of shit in the last boss area, and it sits next to this amazing cloth physics drapes which when it catches on fire, it burns upwards in a really cool effect. really what the fuck. its like sitting a dog turd next to the mona lisa.
theres other minor issues, like a really fustrating boss fight (ATAC), and Rico's cussing borders on tolerable/annoying area.
been listening to this rapper named "Mega Ran" (Random) http://www.myspace.com/random215
He talks about in one song about how games just aren't the same.
Heather was also talking to me one day about how she used to play games and now she doesn't
mainly because they aren't the same anymore. She feels they "lost" something along the way.
I'm inclined to agree. Something has been lost along the way. Its not just Nostalgia.
Nostalgia is when you remember a game being good you play it again and you realize holy shit this game isn't really good at all. The thing that's been lost for me at least is that certain feeling, I don't know what it is or how to describe it, but its the reason I've played Final Fantasy 4 (2 US), Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Streets of Rage 1, Gunstar Heroes, and many other old-school games over and over again even though its been a long time since they've come out.
Some more modern games that somehow have captured this feel are shockingly enough, 2D games such as Cave Story.. Perhaps Dead Space was a big blockbuster that came close to capturing that "feeling", it was probably the most memorable game of last year for me next to MGS4.
Killzone 2 is the epitome of video games missing that "feeling" something just ain't right with today's video games where they lose their magic and mysticism. They were basically given too little time and too much budget, and the game became a bloated piece of nothingness that leaves no lasting impression in my gaming mind.
Ignore the perfect scores.
